A second death is reportedUnconfirmed
The Daily Mail reported that Russian local media claimed a second person had died of plague in the Irkutsk region. No health authority has confirmed a second death or a second case. Rospotrebnadzor has said no new infectious disease cases were reported among institute employees, and the site will update this entry if officials or major outlets confirm the report.

WHO rates the risk as low
A WHO spokesperson said there was no sign of a wider outbreak and that none of the technician's identified contacts had shown symptoms of illness. WHO assessed the health risk as moderate to low for Irkutsk, low for the rest of Russia, and very low for Europe. Rospotrebnadzor said no new infectious disease cases had been reported among institute employees.

ECDC finds no sign of further spread
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said it was closely monitoring the situation and was in contact with WHO Europe. Based on the limited information available, it said there were no reports of secondary cases and no evidence of sustained person to person transmission. It noted that there has not been a plague case in the EU for decades and that the disease can be treated with antibiotics readily available there.

The Moscow Times reported that Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan had stepped up precautions in response to the reports from Irkutsk.

Maternity hospital screens patientsUnconfirmed
The Moscow Times, citing the independent outlet Lyudi Baikala, reported that the Irkutsk City Perinatal Center gave a patient a checklist for suspected plague when she arrived for an examination on October 5. According to her account, the center has admitted only pregnant patients since October 2, required masks, and temporarily barred partners from attending births. Officials have not confirmed these measures.

Europe joins the monitoring
A European Commission spokesperson said Europe was monitoring the case very closely. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, "I don't think it's cause for alarm, but it is cause for focus." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged people not to heed rumors or speculation.

Institute staff reportedly confinedUnconfirmed
RFE/RL reported, citing employees and relatives, that more than 60 staff at the anti-plague institute had been confined inside the building since October 2, sleeping on floors and chairs while they waited for test results. It also reported quarantine measures at two Irkutsk hospitals and a maternity facility. Russian officials have not confirmed these reports.

U.S. officials comment
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a worker at the lab had been infected and that there was concern it could spread. The CDC said it is monitoring the situation closely with the State Department, and the State Department urged Russia to share accurate information quickly and openly.

WHO says no cause of death is confirmed
The World Health Organization said no cause of death had been officially confirmed and that laboratory testing was reportedly underway. It said all known contacts were being monitored, none had shown symptoms of illness, and the risk to the general population appeared low.

Russian officials report negative tests
Irkutsk Governor Igor Kobzev said no microorganisms related to the technician's work were found in her biological samples, and he called the situation in Irkutsk stable. Rospotrebnadzor, Russia's consumer health agency, said it found no signs of an accident involving pathogens. It said daily testing of her contacts found two COVID-19 infections and two rhinovirus infections, which are unrelated to plague, and no other infections. Kobzev said quarantined family members could be discharged next week.

Axios reported that the White House was monitoring the reports of a suspected plague outbreak in Russia.

Nearly 200 contacts isolated
At least 197 people who may have had contact with the technician were placed under medical isolation, including more than 100 in hospital wards. The Shelekhov district hospital was placed under quarantine. Governor Kobzev said the contacts showed no signs of illness and that their test results were negative.
